This list is maintained as work in progress. I would rather make its limits visible than present it as more complete than it is.
- Verified in person means I have stood at that counter myself, asked the price, and watched how the paperwork gets written.
- Not verified in person yet means the place and the market are real, but what I know comes from published market information or from people I trust — not from my own visit.
- Right now every card below carries the second label. That changes one visit at a time, and the date changes with it.
- I keep the two separate because I want you to be able to believe this page. A list where everything looks equally certain is a list you cannot use.
- No shop, market or clinic pays to appear here. None does.
1 · Eyewear, Henggang
Henggang, in Longgang district, is one of South China's optical manufacturing hubs — factories and wholesale networks sit directly behind the retail malls. The trade figures usually quoted for it are around 125 million pairs a year and more than half of the world's mid-to-high-end frames; the share usually quoted for China's high-end designer frames is around 90%, which I have not traced to a primary source yet, so treat it as a trade claim rather than a checked number. The reason I bring people here instead of a downtown chain is simple: the same lens brand, meaningfully less money, and the people cutting the lenses work a few hundred metres from the people making them.
The checks that matter happen before anything is cut: a real eye test that runs at least 15 minutes and longer if you have astigmatism or a high prescription; the refractive index written down, 1.67 or 1.74, and whether 1.71 would serve you better; the shop's paper certificate of authorisation rather than a screenshot; and the anti-counterfeiting code scanned in the brand's own mini-program while the factory seal is still intact.
Wangchao王潮
Metro Line 3, Tangkeng station — the mall sits on the station's second level. It is the newest fit-out of the four and the fastest for same-day work.
Regular shops cluster on the second and third floors. Ground-floor stalls are where most of the problems are.
Not verified in person yet — I will update this note following my next visit.
Henggang mall横岗眼镜城
Line 3, Henggang station, about 600 m on foot. The widest selection and the most factory-direct pricing of the four, which is why it is where I start a first visit.
Good for comparing two lens brands side by side in an afternoon, and for buying more than one pair, which is normal here.
Not verified in person yet — I will update this note following my next visit.
Jiabao嘉宝
Line 3, Henggang station, exits C or D. An indoor mall with many package-deal shops, which makes it the easiest place to compare a written quote against another one.
I use it as the second stop on the same day: whatever Wangchao quoted, I ask for the same specification here in writing.
Not verified in person yet — I will update this note following my next visit.
Xinma新马
Line 3, Henggang station, roughly 20 minutes on foot. Wholesale-oriented, and the one worth the walk when you are buying several pairs.
Less polished than the other three, and less patient with someone who cannot ask in Chinese — which is exactly when having me there helps.

2 · Dental
Dental is the one category on this page with no clinic names on it, and that is deliberate. A wrong medical referral costs far more than an empty slot, so I do not publish a clinic name, address or phone number before I have sat in the chair myself. What I can tell you now is how I sort the options, and what I ask for once I am in the room.
Implants, crowns and veneers are quoted by system and material, so the only number that means anything is an itemised written quote naming the implant brand and the crown material. Ask for the CBCT scan and for your own DICOM files — you need them if a dentist at home is going to review the plan. On aligners, the real decision is AngelAlign versus Invisalign rather than the price gap, because on Invisalign the difference between Shenzhen and home is small; the choice is about staging speed and who monitors you, not about saving money.
Private chains with in-house labs私立口腔连锁 · 种植与牙冠
Implants and crowns are the work people fly here for, and the chains that run their own lab can turn a restoration around in days rather than weeks.
What I check before recommending one: which implant system in writing, whether the dentist speaks English or only the coordinator, and what happens to money already paid if a multi-stage plan stops halfway.

Aligner clinics时代天使 / 隐适美
For mild to moderate cases the whole chair-side part happens in one visit — imaging, scan, attachment bonding, first trays — and later stages ship to you.
The shop question I ask is not the price. It is whether the first visit includes full imaging, and whether they will say plainly that a complex bite is not a remote case.
Not verified in person yet — I will update this note following my next visit.
Imaging and records firstCBCT 影像与原始文件
Any clinic that quotes before imaging is skipping the step that shows root position, bone level and bite relationship. I treat that as a reason to leave.
Ask for an itemised English invoice and for the original DICOM files. Without them, a dentist at home is working from someone else's summary.
Not verified in person yet — I will update this note following my next visit.
Not medical advice. Suitability depends on your own imaging and history. Get a written itemised quote before you commit, ask what it excludes, and get a second opinion on any large plan — particularly at clinics a few minutes from a border crossing, where the sales pressure is highest.
3 · Health check
A checkup is the easiest thing to book in Shenzhen and the easiest to book wrongly. Three questions decide it: which package tier actually contains the items you came for, whether the report comes out in English, and whether you can book far enough ahead. Public hospital international departments usually need two weeks; chain centres often have next-day slots. Most providers want 8–12 hours of fasting before blood tests and an abdominal ultrasound, so it is a morning appointment.
HKU-Shenzhen Hospital香港大学深圳医院
Public Grade-A, run on a Hong Kong clinical governance model, and one of the few places where a bilingual report is routine rather than a favour.
This is where I would send someone whose results need to be taken seriously by a doctor back home. The trade-off is booking lead time — ask about English reporting when you book, not on the day.
Not verified in person yet — I will update this note following my next visit.
United Family Hospital新风和睦家
Private and bilingual throughout, about 15 minutes from the Futian crossing, with a shuttle bus. Comfortable, fast reporting, and priced accordingly.
The reason to pick it is language and speed: if you are in Shenzhen for five days and want the report in your hand in English before you fly, this is the shape of place that works.
Not verified in person yet — I will update this note following my next visit.
iKang Guobin, Futian爱康国宾
A chain centre, standardised and the cheapest of the three, with next-day slots in most weeks — the realistic option if you decide on a Tuesday and want to go on Wednesday.
I would use it for a first or routine annual check, and I would still ask which items are actually in the tier, because entry packages often cover only basic panels.
Not verified in person yet — I will update this note following my next visit.
The two things people get wrong: assuming the entry package includes imaging and tumour markers, and assuming the report will be accepted abroad. Confirm the item list in writing before you sign, and if the results matter, use a Grade-A public hospital or an internationally affiliated private one and ask for the original DICOM files.
4 · Electronics, Huaqiangbei
Huaqiangbei holds roughly 115,000 businesses and 35 electronics markets inside 1.45 km² — the largest electronics market on earth, and one of the easiest places in the world to be confidently sold the wrong thing. Genuinely cheaper here: earphones and IEMs, phone accessories, power banks, components and maker hardware, drones and gimbals. Usually not cheaper: global-brand phones and laptops, because you are paying close to international money for a warranty that is domestic-only. And grey-import stock, called 水货, sits on the same floor as new retail stock, often in the same display case.
SEG Electronics Market赛格电子市场
Huaqiang North Road, Metro Line 1 Huaqiang Road station. The largest multi-floor bazaar in the district, and the best single stop for cables, chargers, power banks and small audio.
The first number quoted is not the price. What I watch is the seal, the serial number and the warranty card, in that order, before money moves.
Not verified in person yet — I will update this note following my next visit.
Mingtong Digital City明通数码城
Five minutes on foot from Huaqiang Road station. Phone and tablet wholesale floors, new and second-hand side by side, and the strongest selection for spare parts and batteries.
Warranty is domestic-only on most mainland-market phones, so ask explicitly for the international version if that is the one you need. Refurbished units sold as new are the standard problem here.
Not verified in person yet — I will update this note following my next visit.
Yuanwang Digital Mall远望数码城
Accessories and small-batch wholesale. It is the place I go to check a quote that someone was given elsewhere, because the counters here answer quickly and in numbers.
One caution that has nothing to do with the shop: drones and power stations push a US resident over the customs line fast, and the duty can be larger than the saving.

5 · Wigs and hair
Shenzhen is not China's cheapest wig city — that is Xuchang in Henan. What it has is rarer: factory-backed studios where you are measured in person, which is the difference between a piece you wear and one that stays in a drawer. The vocabulary matters, because it is where the price is decided: hand-tied needle-work bases versus machine-wefted, Remy hair with the cuticle aligned in one direction versus mixed, and a lace front for the hairline. Lead time is the part that decides your itinerary — custom work runs 15 to 30 days, so only the fitting needs you in Shenzhen, and the finished piece ships after you fly.
Longgang hair-goods cluster龙岗假发产业带
Factory-side showrooms in Longgang, with factory-adjacent pricing on human-hair units and shops that will hand-tie a base to your own measurements.
This is the cluster I work through for custom work. Most studios here are appointment-only, and English is not guaranteed on the floor.
Not verified in person yet — I will update this note following my next visit.
Custom fitting studio, central假发定制工作室
The fitting is the entire reason to buy in person. A head measurement more than 1 cm off is the most common cause of a piece that slips, and no online form fixes that.
What I ask at the door: is the cap hand-tied or machine-wefted, what grade is the hair really, and is servicing included afterwards.
Not verified in person yet — I will update this note following my next visit.
Ready-made floors成品假发
Mall boutiques in Futian and Nanshan with wide ready-made selections, no appointment needed, and a low enough entry point to try the idea before commissioning anything.
This is also the only option that fits a short trip cleanly: you carry it home in your luggage rather than shipping it, which matters at your own border.
Not verified in person yet — I will update this note following my next visit.
Shipping versus carrying is not a small difference. A piece you carry home can fall inside your personal exemption. A piece that is mailed to you gets no traveller allowance at all, and for US residents the parcel de minimis treatment ended in 2025, so it is assessed from the first dollar. Decide which one you are buying before you order.
6 · Toys and gifts
Three wholesale clusters, each with a different character, and none of them is a toy shop in the sense you mean at home. The gap between the wholesale price and your local retail price is the whole point, but it comes with conditions: many stalls sell in mixed lots rather than single units, and the price you are quoted depends on whether you are buying in one piece or by the case.
Sungang Stationery & Toy Gift City笋岗文具玩具礼品城
3 Bao'an North Road, Luohu district, Metro Line 7 Sungang station. The largest toy and stationery cluster in the city — 200-plus stalls, with brand agencies and factory-direct counters in the same building.
Blocks, RC models and figures under one roof, and the best first stop if you have half a day. Go mid-afternoon; counters clear odd lots late in the day.
Not verified in person yet — I will update this note following my next visit.
China South City — Stationery & Toy City华南城国际文具玩具精品城
Pinghu, Longgang district. Over 100,000 m² with 300-plus tenants, wholesale-first, and the right choice for a large order or for arranging shipping.
It is far from the centre, so budget a full half day including transport. If you are buying one gift, this is the wrong trip.
Not verified in person yet — I will update this note following my next visit.
Fumin Toy & Gift Market福民文具玩具礼品批发市场
Futian district near Fuqiang Road and Fumin Road, Metro Lines 4 and 7 to Fumin station. Export-oriented stalls, close to Huanggang port — convenient if you are crossing to Hong Kong the same day.
Export stock and domestic stock are priced differently here, so ask which one you are being quoted. That single question is the most important part of the work at this market.
Not verified in person yet — I will update this note following my next visit.
7 · Gold, Shuibei
Shuibei in Luohu is where a large share of China's pure-gold jewellery is processed — a dense cluster of wholesale counters, brand storefronts and assay offices within a few blocks. Gold is the one category where people compare the wrong number. Do not compare total prices, because the gold itself is priced off the same daily benchmark at every counter in the district. Compare the making charge per gram, which is the only part that actually differs, and then decide whether you are paying for a brand name or for the metal.
On fineness, look for the stamped mark on the piece itself and match it to what the receipt says. On certification, ask whether an independent assay certificate can be issued for the specific piece you are buying, and get it before you leave the counter. I am not putting a per-gram figure on this page: it moves daily, and the only number that means anything is the one on the board the day you stand there. Anything I quote today would be wrong by the time you read it.
Shuibei gold district, wholesale counters水贝黄金珠宝产业聚集区
Wholesale-first floors where the making charge per gram is the negotiation, and where brand markups mostly disappear. This is where the arithmetic is best.
It is also the least forgiving place to be a foreigner with no Chinese: prices move fast, the board changes during the day, and nothing is written down unless you ask for it in writing.
Not verified in person yet — I will update this note following my next visit.
Brand storefronts, Shuibei水贝品牌门店
The same district, the other end of the trade-off: you pay a higher making charge for a design you can recognise, a proper receipt and someone to go back to.
I would send a first-time buyer here rather than to a wholesale floor, because the paperwork and the aftercare are the parts you cannot fix from another country.
Not verified in person yet — I will update this note following my next visit.
Assay and certification检测与鉴定证书
The step people skip, and the one that protects you at home. Ask for a certificate issued against the piece in your hand, not against a sample, and check the number on it matches the receipt.
I do not name a specific assay office yet. When I have used one and seen the paperwork, the name goes here with the date.
Not verified in person yet — I will update this note following my next visit.
What I will not do on this page: quote a per-gram making charge or a daily gold price. Both are set at the counter on the day, and a number published here would be stale before you arrived. Ask for the day's benchmark price and the making charge as two separate lines on the receipt.
Do these shops pay you to be listed?
No. Not one, and there is no paid tier hiding behind a softer word. No shop, market or clinic on this page has paid me anything, and none has been promised a place on it. If that ever changes, the section will say so at the top and the listing will be labelled as advertising rather than as somewhere I take people.
How do you choose a shop?
Four tests, and a place has to pass all of them. I have bought something there or stood at the counter and asked the price myself. They will put the specification and the price in writing before money moves. Someone on site can actually communicate with a foreign visitor. And if something goes wrong afterwards, there is a person and a receipt to go back to. Fail any one of those and the place does not go on the list, however cheap it is.
Can I visit without you?
Yes — every market here is a public place and you can walk in alone. The honest answer is that the first visit is where the language gap costs money: the specification, the written receipt and the aftercare terms are the three things that quietly change when nobody asks for them in Chinese. Browsing independently is entirely reasonable. For the day you actually buy, having someone next to you is worth more than it sounds.
What if you have not visited a shop yet?
I state this on the card, in the same place every time, and I do not present it otherwise. The place is real and the market around it is real, but what I know comes from published market information or from people I trust. When I go, I change the label and put the date on it. Until then it stays as it is — a list that pretends to be more certain than it is would be useless to you.
If you operate a shop in Shenzhen and believe it should be considered, please write to me and set out what distinguishes it. [email protected]
Page updated 29 October 2026. Every card carries the date it was last changed — when I visit a place, the label above it changes and the date changes with it.
