Five of these six fit in one trip. Here is the one that does not.
If you are entering on the 240-hour (10-day) visa-free transit — the route most US, UK and Canadian passport holders use — the default assumption that medical care "takes months" is mostly wrong. What matters is whether the clinical part has to happen in Shenzhen, or whether only the planning does.
Electronics · Huaqiangbei
Same-day pickup. The one category where you should worry about US customs, not time. Drones and power stations can cross your $1,800 threshold fast.
Glasses · Henggang
30 minutes to 1 hour for single-vision lenses. Branded progressive or 1.74 high-index lenses take 2–3 days. Roughly 35–60% below downtown Shenzhen optical chains.
Health checkup
The appointment takes half a day. The report takes 5–10 working days — but private hospitals issue it as a PDF, usually in English, and send it by email or app. You read it at home, not in Shenzhen. Ask for the English version before you pay.
Custom wigs
Ready-made wigs are same-day. A measured, hand-tied piece takes 15–30 days to produce — but the fitting (the part that actually needs you there) is a single appointment. The finished piece ships internationally; allow 2–4 weeks and check who pays duties.
Clear aligners
Mild to moderate cases can be scanned and planned in one visit, with later aligner stages shipped to you under remote monitoring. But this only works under three conditions — read them before you book →
Dental implants
The one that genuinely needs two. Surgery is 30–60 minutes; the implant then has to fuse with the bone for 3–6 months before the permanent crown goes on. Exception: All-on-4 / All-on-6 full-arch cases can often leave with fixed temporary teeth the same day — so you fly home with teeth, and return only for the final bridge.
The pattern: only the part that requires your body in the chair has to happen in Shenzhen. Scans, plans, reports, production and follow-up can all travel without you. Once you split the process that way, five of six items fit inside a 10-day visa window — and the sixth is still worth doing, because the first trip already solves the problem.

The three mistakes visitors make
- Assuming a low quote is the final price. In dental work especially, the headline implant price often excludes extraction, bone grafting, sinus lift and the temporary crown. Ask what is not included.
- Forgetting the tax and customs side. China refunds 11% VAT to departing foreign visitors at designated stores — but only if you buy in mainland China and exit through a mainland checkpoint. Hong Kong purchases are not eligible. And US residents still face an $800 personal exemption with a 3% flat rate up to $1,800. Full rules →
- Booking a clinic near the border because it is convenient. The highest-pressure sales floors in Shenzhen sit within a few minutes of Luohu and Futian checkpoints. Get a second opinion before signing a large treatment plan.
Practical basics
- Payment: Private clinics and malls take Visa/Mastercard, but many small shops in Huaqiangbei and Henggang prefer WeChat Pay or Alipay. Set up either app with a foreign card before you cross the border.
- Language: Private clinic chains generally have English coordinators. Public hospitals have bilingual desks but no guarantee of an English-speaking clinician at every appointment. Confirm the treating dentist's language, not just the coordinator's.
- Getting there: Shenzhen borders Hong Kong. Flying into Hong Kong is often 20–40% cheaper than flying into mainland China, and you can cross at Shenzhen Bay, Futian or Luohu, or take the Shekou ferry directly to Hong Kong airport without entering Hong Kong.
